OPAL BEAUTY
concept
THE
Opal Beauty is a cosmetic company concept that I designed for an assignment in one of my graphic design classes in college. One day our professor showed up to class with a bag full of random items. We were instructed to blindly reach into the bag, choose an item, and then design a brand inspired by the item we got. I pulled a Starburst candy out of the bag.
I know what you're thinking, because it's what I was thinking, too - how do you design a brand based on a Starburst candy? The first thing I did was research the origin of the candy for inspiration. I used the fact that Starburst were invented in the 60s as my starting point. The women in the 60s were super into fashion and makeup, and I came across a lot of pictures of women with their lips as the focus. This inspired me to create cosmetic company with a focus on a line of lipsticks. I drew color inspiration from 60s diners and different lipstick shades from back then. In my research, I also kept coming across a pattern called "Starburst" that I incorporated into the packaging for the lipstick.
Finally, the name I landed on for the cosmetic brand is is Opal Beauty. This name is inspired by the fact that the Starburst candy was originally called Opal Fruits.

The final designs of the Opal Beauty Company include a logo, packaging design, promotional materials, and a cosmetic bag. In this final presentation of the brand, you'll also notice that the names of each individual lipstick were inspired by popular phrases in the 60s. Take a look!
